Welcome to DF!

You’re among frenemies!

Welcome to the new bimonthly business review we are proud to introduce. We live in a era when publishers seek to find sustainable digital business models, to grow, but also to preserve the freedom of press in a fragmented digital world sought by authorities to be controlled. New technologies and new consumer behavior are causing a fundamental shift in how we do business. This is a topic of endless passionate discussions with all global industry executives we meet in the different programmes we run within WAN-IFRA.
Digital Frenemies contains business cases, analysis and viewpoints. Moreover, some of our most successful members have agreed to talk about their strategies and how they implement them. We want to be immediate, sincere, without hype and a forum for open discussions, dealing with the industry’s important and tough questions.
We believe the next few years will be game changing for the publishing industry – will we be relevant in the future? How can publishers change their business to digital? What is media’s role and shape in a future digital information landscape?
The media industry is a brother’s keeper. Whenever our role in society is challenged we stand together. Whenever fundamental rights such as freedom of speech is under attack, we join in defense. Still we love to hate each other. We disagree on everything. We compete for everything and we openly challenge each other over importance and relevance. More than any other industry we are forever friends. Forever rivals. We are frenemies.
